Africa Climate Mobility Initiative

The Africa Climate Mobility Initiative (ACMI) is a joint undertaking of the African Union Commission, the World Bank, the United Nations Development Programme, the International Organization for Migration, and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. It is coordinated by the Global Centre for Climate Mobility. The Initiative seeks to generate political momentum around a common policy agenda and to strengthen regional preparedness for the impacts of climate change on human mobility across the African continent.

The ACMI builds the evidence base for this agenda through modelled projections of future climate mobility scenarios to 2050 and through field research capturing how climate stressors shape people’s decisions to move or stay. It brings together diverse actors and stakeholders from across the continent and beyond, and advances a common Agenda for Action, national Blueprints for guiding policy and investment in addressing climate mobility.

The Initiative contributes to strengthening evidence-based, inclusive climate mobility action by:

• Producing technical reports and modelled projections on the drivers and future scenarios of climate mobility in Africa.
• Produce national Blueprints to inform contributions to Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and National Adaptation Plans (NAPs).
• Advancing a common Agenda for Action to guide policy and investment across the continent.
• Raising the profile of climate mobility at international processes.
• Supporting youth-led initiatives to empower young people as agents of climate mobility solutions.

Through this work, it is aimed to build collective resilience, chart positive adaptation pathways and empower people and communities to make informed decisions about whether to move or stay, consolidating sustainable, people positive and nature positive development gains under more severe climatic conditions.
